Architect in the House - 2007

Every year during Architecture Week, the Royal Institute of British Architects in association with the charity Shelter, promote this scheme to encourage clients to have a one hour consultation in their home or office in exchange for a minimum donation of £35 to Shelter.

The RIBA co-ordinates the public's response and refers you to a participating Practice, usually within five miles of your home or office. All RIBA members participating in the scheme are usually RIBA Registered Practices. We are such a Practice and have participated for several years. Each year we undertake an increasing number of visits.

In 2002 we visited 21 homes from Alnmouth to Sunderland. In 2003 we travelled as far as Northallerton, Guisborough and Redcar, visited 83 homes and contributed £2,300 to the sum of over £100,000 raised that year. In response to the 2004 call for participants we visited 93 homes and raised £2,975. In 2005 we visited 113 properties and raised £4,305 and last year, in 2006, we visited 87 homes and raised £3895. In 2007 we have made 32 visits and raised a total of £1,505.

Architecture Week 2007 takes place between 15 and 24 June 2007 and we are again participating in the scheme. This Practice will continue to run the scheme throughout the year so it is never too late to be involved if you so wish, just give us a call. We are always happy to meet prospective Clients for a preliminary meeting without obligation. Please contact us to discuss your project and to help us to increase the funds raised for Shelter. For visits booked after the end of Architecture Week we ask applicants to make a minimum donation of £40.

Following such consultations during 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 we undertook a number of the projects discussed, ranging in value from £7,000 to £900,000.
