Development: Pre-application advice

Project: Works to Newburn House, Newburn.

Client: The Executors of Dr & Mrs H. A. Scott

Newburn House occupies an important site in the hamlet of Newburn, arguably one of the oldest inhabited parts of Newcastle. The archaeologist’s Report, prepared in 1995 indicates Newburn formed part of the Royal demesne of the Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria and, if the post-Conquest village can be assumed to be on the same site as the Saxon burgh, this settlement has had a longer period of continuous occupation than almost anywhere else in Tyne and Wear. The existing house dates from the mid-late 18th Century, featuring sandstone rubble walls with quoins, Welsh slate roof, a pedimented Tuscan porch and ashlar-corniced end brick chimneys.

We were first involved in this matter in 1994 when we successfully applied for, and obtained, on behalf of Dr & Mrs Scott, outline planning permission for the construction of a new dwelling in the grounds. Thereafter it was decided not to proceed with the development, but to renew the Permission when it lapsed.

Sadly, in 2012 our then Clients passed away, and we were approached by their Executors with a view to appraising further development potential for the existing house, and for the extensive grounds. In this role we are working with Messrs Ward Hadaway and Foster Maddison. Having undertaken a measured survey of both the house and the grounds, including outbuildings, and an assessment of levels, we have prepared and submitted proposals as part of a Planning Application.

We are delighted the Local Authority have now granted Planning Permission for this development:
